RED SCARF PROJECT
KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS

In 2005, Orphan Foundation of America (OFA) launched a unique initiative to warm the hearts (and necks) of college-bound foster youth. OFA began taking donations of handmade red scarves to put into Valentine’s Day Care Packages for the college-bound foster youth. Word spread quickly around the charitable knitting/crocheting community.  Find more information on their flyer.

Helping Children in Haiti

Thousands of children in orphanages in Haiti no longer have a roof over their heads, food to eat or clean water to drink. Many of those children are in the adoption process with parents in the United States. They are in grave danger of food and water shortages, looting and homelessness.  Some have been matched with adoptive parents in America, some were waiting to be matched.  There are good families here that want to adopt them, and are quickly trying to prepare the necessary paperwork.

We are aware that USCIS has the authority to issue a humanitarian parole for people without legal documentation to travel to the United States. While granting a humanitarian parole is outside the normal procedures, the United States government has granted them in the past (e.g. Cambodia and Romania).

We are requesting that you contact USCIS and request that humanitarian paroles be granted to these children who are eligible for adoption, children who had been living in an orphanage prior to the earthquake.

While we realize that the United States seeks to honor the adoption process established in Haiti, we believe that these children are in dire need, and the country of Haiti would be served well by letting these children come to the United States. We feel that Haitian authorities would agree to this if it was proposed. What better way for the United States to help Haiti than to care for Haiti's most vulnerable, most needy citizens?

Please take our request for humanitarian parole under consideration.
